Our History
The Brunei Japan Friendship Association (BJFA) is an organization with the objective of promoting and enhancing, cultural and educational exchanges, commerce, leisure activities and people-to-people exchange between Brunei and Japan.
It is the reciprocal organization to the Japan Brunei Friendship Association based in Tokyo, Japan which was incorporated in 1985. After 25 years of uninterrupted supply of LNG from Brunei LNG to Japanese customers, Tokyo Electric, Tokyo Gas, and Osaka Gas, a stronger relationship not only at the company level but also at the leadership level, developed and grew over the years.
This led to the decision to consolidate the strong personal and business relationship between Brunei and Japan and to lay down the framework for more people-to-people exchange by establishing BJFA. BJFA was officially registered under the Societies Act on 28 November 1998.
BJFA co-founder, His Excellency, the late YAM Pg Setia Negara Pg Hj Mohd Yusof bin Pg Hj Abdul Rahim was the former Brunei Ambassador to Japan and was well known by many Bruneians as the only Bruneian who was witness to the sad and tragic day of Hiroshima. The other co-founder, His Excellency Mr. Masao Kawai, was the former Japanese Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam in 1998. Dato Paduka Hamdillah H A Wahab, as the former executive director of BLNG, acted as a facilitator to realize the dream of the two founders.
